New Asbestos Research Center Opens in Sydney, Australia

Asbestos disease is on the rise. In Australia, 20,000 people are expected to be affected by asbestos diseases in the next 50 years. Sydney, Australia, is hoping their new Asbestos Disease Research Center can do something about it.

For years Bernie Banton fought hard for victims of asbestos related diseases – his own life eventually claimed in 2007 by mesothelioma. The new research facility named in his honor opened in Concord.

Former NSW Premier and now Chair of the Asbestos Diseases Research Foundation, Bob Carr hopes this new state-of-the-art facility will ensure that eventually no one will have to endure the struggle Bernie battled with.

“It aims to find a cure – it aims to banish these diseases.”

Bernie Banton’s widow Karen has expressed her thanks.

“What a momentous day, and certainly one that Bernie would be very proud of.”

She says the $12 million center will give fresh hope to sufferers and their families.

We think so too.
